There are an estimated 250,000 to 500,000 cars that were damaged in hurricane Katrina that will make their way to used car lots soon. Puerto Rico though very far removed from Louisiana is not immune to this illegal activity. Even if we do not get Louisiana flooded cars, we have our share of flooded vehicles from the heavy rainfall during the rainy season that sometimes causes to rivers to flood outlying areas. Every driver here in Puerto Rico at some point has to drive through a foot or more of water; some drivers are not so lucky and have their cars flooded first before they can drive them away. Even though insurance companies pay car owners for cars lost in floods and then designate these cars flood damaged. There some unscrupulous car dealers that purchases these vehicles in order to resell them. Like we say in Puerto Rico “an older women can always put on fresh make up and lipstick”. You may not always be able to tell that a car was in a flood if you are not aware of the problem.

However if you are looking for a flood damaged vehicle there are some signs that a vehicle has been under water:
• Rust on engine screws
• Seats and door panels for have faded
• New carpeting or seat upholstery in a used car
• Water stains, mildew, sand, and silt where it should not be found

The national insurance crime bureau is offering free search of car vehicle identification numbers to learn if the car was involved in a claim caused by any hurricane. This service may even save you the cost of hiring a mechanic for every vehicle that piques your interest. In fact there are people who make money online by charging people to find out if a car has been in a flood. All they do is go to the free site to find the information and charge you for it. Knowledge truly is power!

In the end, after you have verified that the car you want to buy has not been in a flood, it is best to always have a certified mechanic check the vehicle for flood or any other kind of damage. You will always be glad that you did.
